What to do if your visa is delayed past the processing time

Practical, calm steps when your visa is taking longer than the stated window — what to check, who to contact and how to protect your trip.

Confirm the stated window first

Processing times are ranges, not guarantees. Before raising anything, confirm the stated window for your route and your application date — a few extra days inside the upper bound is normal, not a problem.

Check your application status and emails

Many delays are silent requests for an extra document. Check your application portal and the email you applied with — including spam — for any request you may have missed before assuming the application is stuck.

Contact the right channel

If the window is clearly exceeded and no request is pending, contact the visa application centre or embassy through the official channel for your route. Keep your reference number and dates ready, and keep communication polite and concise.

Protect your trip

Where possible, keep flights and accommodation refundable or flexible until the visa is confirmed. If a hard travel date is approaching, ask the embassy about expedited options — but never book non-refundable travel on the assumption the visa will arrive in time.
