Schengen visa for Indian passport holders: a starter guide

What a Schengen visa is, which countries it covers, how the 90-day rule works and where to start your application.

What a Schengen visa lets you do

A Schengen short-stay visa lets you travel across the Schengen area — most EU countries plus a few others — for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, on a single visa. You apply to the country that is your main destination, or the country where you spend the most nights, or the first Schengen country you enter if no main destination applies.

It is important to understand that the Schengen visa is not a single country's visa — once inside the area, you can usually move between member countries without further border checks, but the 90/180 day counter applies across the whole area.

The 90/180 rule explained simply

You can stay up to 90 days inside the Schengen area in any rolling 180-day window. The counter is not reset by a short trip out of the area — it counts the days you were physically present over the past 180 days. Overstaying can cause future refusals, so track your days carefully on longer or multi-trip plans.

Where Indian applicants usually start

Indian residents typically apply through the destination country's visa application centre (such as VFS Global) with an appointment. You will need a passport valid well beyond your trip, travel insurance meeting Schengen requirements, proof of accommodation, a flight itinerary and financial evidence.

Common reasons for delays

Vague itineraries, weak financial evidence, and inconsistent dates across bookings and the application form are the most common causes of delays or refusals. Prepare a clear day-by-day plan that matches your bookings before you apply.
