UK Visa for Indians Living in the UAE: Fast Options from Dubai and Abu Dhabi (2026)

Indians in Dubai and Abu Dhabi need a UK Standard Visitor visa (£135); UAE residence does not unlock the ETA. Here is how to apply locally, fast-track options and when you can transit without a visa.

You live in Abu Dhabi, London is a seven-hour flight, and your Emirati neighbour just filled in a £20 ETA on his phone. Your Indian passport sends you down a different road. Living in the UAE does not change it, but the UAE is one of the easier places to apply from, with centres in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Yes, Indians living in the UAE need a UK Standard Visitor visa (£135 for up to 6 months). UAE residence gives no ETA or transit exemption, but a valid US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand visa lets you change planes in the UK without a transit visa.

Does UAE residence change the rules for the UK?

No. The UK decides by nationality. UAE citizens can use the ETA, but eligibility depends on the passport, not on residence, and India is not on the ETA list. India is a UK visa national, so you apply for a Standard Visitor visa like any Indian applicant. Your UAE residence visa, Emirates ID and job still matter as evidence that you will return. Our passport vs residency guide explains why.

How do you apply for a UK visa from Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

  1. Apply online on GOV.UK for a Standard Visitor visa, no earlier than 3 months before you travel. Upload your passport, UAE residence visa, Emirates ID, salary certificate or trade licence, bank statements and trip plan.
  2. Pay £135 (or the long-term visa fee) and, if you need it and the centre offers it, the priority or super priority fee.
  3. Book your appointment at the UK visa application centre in Dubai (Wafi Mall, Umm Hurair 2) or Abu Dhabi (The Mall, World Trade Centre, Airport Road).
  4. Give biometrics. Your passport is returned the same day.
  5. Wait for the decision, usually within 3 weeks on standard service.

UAE visa centres briefly paused new UK applications during regional disruption in early 2026 and reopened on 4 March, so check the VFS booking page before you plan dates. Timing tips are in how early should you apply for a visa.

From the UAE, Indians apply for a Standard Visitor visa; only certain third-country visas cover airside transit. Flowchart created for this article.

Transiting the UK on the way to the US or Canada

India is on the UK's Direct Airside Transit Visa list, so changing planes at Heathrow normally needs a £41.50 DATV. Your UAE residence does not exempt you. These do, under Home Office transit guidance:

  • A valid visa for the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
  • An expired one of those, if it is less than 6 months since you last entered that country with a valid visa.
  • A valid US green card or Canadian PR card.
  • A valid EEA residence permit or EEA/Swiss Category D visa.

Carry the physical document, as electronic versions are not accepted. More in our transit visa guide.

Coming back to the UAE

Your UAE residence visa must be valid when you return. A residence visa is cancelled automatically after more than 180 continuous days outside the UAE, with limited exceptions, so a normal UK holiday is no issue, but long stays need planning.

Mistakes that get applications refused

  1. Applying for an ETA. It is not open to Indian passport holders, even with UAE residence.
  2. Residence visa about to expire. Renew first if you can; a lapsing permit weakens your ties to the UAE.
  3. Salary certificate and bank statement don't match. See our bank statement guide.
  4. Unclear trip costs or sponsor. Show who pays and the sponsor's relationship and documents.
  5. Booking non-refundable flights before the decision. Standard decisions take about 3 weeks.
