Bank statement for visa applications: what officers look for

How to present a bank statement that supports your visa application — income, balance, consistency and what to avoid.

Show genuine, regular income

A consistent pattern of salary or business income over several months reads as a stable financial life. A statement with a sudden large deposit right before the application can look artificial, even if it is legitimate — be ready to explain the source.

Balance should match the trip

There is no fixed number, but the balance should reasonably cover your trip and leave room to spare. An officer compares your declared trip cost against your balance and income — a mismatch raises questions.

Get an official, stamped statement

Where possible, request a stamped or certified bank statement for the period the visa asks for (often the last 3–6 months). Online exports are sometimes accepted, but a stamped copy removes any doubt about authenticity.
