You work in Dubai Marina, Eid holidays are coming, and Emirates flies to Tokyo every night. Your Emirati colleague just books a ticket. You hold an Indian passport, so you need a Japanese visa first. Living in the UAE helps: you can get Japan's eVISA, but you still have to hand your passport in at VFS Global.
UAE residence does not make Japan visa-free for Indians. It lets you apply for a Japan tourist eVISA through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi: AED 20 visa fee for Indians plus AED 110 service fee.
Does living in the UAE change the rules for Indians?
Partly. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the UAE among countries where eVISA eligibility depends on residence, with applications going through an accredited agency rather than direct online. In the UAE that agency is VFS Global, which has handled all ordinary-passport Japan visa applications since 1 August 2024.
A UAE residence visa or Golden Visa gives you no visa-free entry to Japan. You still need a visa issued before travel. For how residence and nationality interact, read passport vs residency: which one decides your visa.
Dubai or Abu Dhabi: where do you apply?
Your emirate of residence decides the office, not where you work or fly from.
- Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai: residents of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. The VFS centre is at WAFI Mall, Umm Hurair 2.
- Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi: residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. If your residence visa is from another emirate but you live in Abu Dhabi, VFS asks for proof such as a tenancy contract, TAQA bill and three months of card or bank statements.
The eVISA is for tourism only, single entry. Visiting friends, family or business needs a sticker visa, applied for through the same VFS centre. Either way, book an appointment and submit your original passport in person or through an authorised representative.

What documents do you need?
This is the Dubai eVISA checklist (November 2025). Abu Dhabi's list is similar, but check the one for your office.
- Original passport and colour copy, with more than 2 blank visa pages.
- Visa application form, typed in block letters and signed, with one 45 x 35 mm photo no older than six months.
- Copy of your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID. Bring the original Emirates ID to VFS.
- Flight reservation and hotel booking for the full stay, showing your name and the hotel's address.
- A day-by-day itinerary with places, accommodation and contacts.
- Original employment certificate addressed to the Consul-General, stating salary, position and trip purpose.
- Three months of UAE personal bank statements, not older than 10 days, showing name, account number and IBAN.
Is your residence visa long enough? Dubai asks for it to be valid 30 days from your return date. Abu Dhabi's checklist says at least six months. If you are near renewal, renew first. Our bank statement guide helps with the finances part.

Mistakes that get applications refused
- Applying at the wrong office. Abu Dhabi residents cannot use the Dubai consulate.
- Choosing the eVISA for a family visit or business trip. It is tourism only.
- Booking flights less than two weeks away. Dubai will not accept the application.
- Bank statements older than 10 days, or without your IBAN.
- An employment letter without salary, company seal and wet signature.
- Incomplete files. The Dubai checklist warns they lead to immediate rejection.
Coming back to the UAE
Your UAE residence visa must still be valid when you return from Japan. Keep your Emirates ID with you. Long trips carry a second risk: under UAE rules, a resident who stays outside the country for more than 180 days in a row has the visa cancelled automatically. Golden Visa holders are treated differently and can enter while their residency is valid.
