Egypt Visa for Indians Living in the UAE: Why the E-Visa Beats Airport Luck (2026)

Egypt's e-visa is open to Indian passport holders and costs US$30 for a single entry. Here is why UAE residents should apply online first instead of counting on a visa at Cairo airport.

You live in Sharjah, the flight to Cairo is under four and a half hours, and a colleague swears his Emirates ID got him a visa at the airport. Maybe it did. But Egypt's own e-visa portal does not say that, and you do not want to argue the point at a passport desk at 2 a.m. Here is the route that works on an Indian passport.

Apply for the Egypt e-visa online at least 7 days before you fly: India is on the eligible list and the single-entry tourist visa costs US$30. Your UAE residence alone is not an officially confirmed shortcut.

Does a UAE residence visa get Indians a visa on arrival in Egypt?

Not reliably. Egypt's official e-visa portal, run by the Ministry of Interior, publishes the e-visa rules and the list of eligible nationalities. It does not publish visa-on-arrival rules for UAE residents.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) lists Egypt under visa on arrival for Indian nationals who hold a valid US, Schengen, UK or GCC country visa and have travelled on it at least once. Whether a UAE residence visa counts as a "GCC country visa" is not spelled out by Egypt. Airlines decide whether to board you, and they follow Egypt's rules, not MEA's summary.

Our advice: treat the e-visa as your main route. It costs the same kind of money, it is approved before you fly, and nobody at check-in in Dubai can question it. For the general principle, see passport vs residency: which one sets your visa rules.

How do you apply for the Egypt e-visa from Dubai?

  1. Create an account on visa2egypt.gov.eg with your email. Parents can apply for children from their own account.
  2. Choose the tourism visa, single or multiple entry.
  3. Fill the form with your passport details exactly as printed, and your UAE address for contact.
  4. Pay by card (Visa, MasterCard or debit card). The fee is non-refundable.
  5. Wait for the email. The portal emails you when the application is processed, with a link to download the e-visa.
  6. Print it. The e-visa printout must be shown at the port of entry.

The portal lists what you should carry on arrival: the e-visa printout, a passport valid for six months from the arrival date, your travel itinerary and hotel bookings. Business or family visitors also need a supporting letter or invitation. The length of stay is set on your visa, so read the grant before you book your return.

What if you already hold a US, UK or Schengen visa?

According to MEA, Indian nationals with a valid US, UK or Schengen visa that has been used at least once are eligible for a visa on arrival in Egypt. If that is you, it is a reasonable backup. But the e-visa still removes all doubt at check-in, and the fee is modest. If your Schengen visa is new and unused, it does not meet that condition. Read our Schengen visa guide if you are planning one.

Mistakes that get Egypt applications refused

  1. Applying the night before. The portal asks you to create the application at least 7 days before departure.
  2. Less than six months on the passport. Validity is counted from your arrival date, not your departure from Dubai.
  3. Name mismatches. Type your name as in the machine-readable zone of the passport, not as on your Emirates ID.
  4. Not printing the e-visa. A printout is required at entry.
  5. Relying on an unused Schengen or US visa for arrival. It must have been used at least once.

More common pitfalls are covered in visa rejection reasons for Indian applicants.

What about getting back into the UAE?

Check your UAE residence visa is valid for your return date and carry your Emirates ID. UAE government guidance says a residence visa is nullified automatically if you live outside the UAE for more than six months continuously, with some exceptions. A Cairo or Red Sea holiday is far short of that, but an expiring visa can stop you boarding the flight home.
