Size guide
What is passport photo size in mm, cm, inches and pixels?
The standard Indian passport photo is 35 × 45 mm. Every other number is that same photo in a different unit or at a different resolution — keep the 7:9 ratio and they all stay correct.
| Unit | Passport size photo | When you'll see it |
|---|---|---|
| Millimetres (mm) | 35 × 45 mm | The number most Indian forms print |
| Centimetres (cm) | 3.5 × 4.5 cm | Same size, written differently |
| Inches | 1.38 × 1.77 in | Rounded from 35 mm and 45 mm |
| Pixels at 200 DPI | 276 × 354 px | Low-end scan / older portal specs |
| Pixels at 300 DPI | 413 × 531 px | Standard print quality |
| Pixels at 600 DPI | 827 × 1063 px | High-resolution print, large file |
| Passport Seva upload | 630 × 810 px | Common upload guidance — verify on the live portal |
| Aspect ratio | 7 : 9 (35 : 45) | Keep this and every size above scales correctly |
Pixel figures are calculated from 35 mm and 45 mm at the stated resolution, so they may differ by a pixel or two from tools that round differently. Anything within a pixel of these values passes.
By document
Passport photo size for Passport Seva, PAN, UPSC, SSC and bank forms
Indian portals do not agree with each other. The passport application, the PAN portal and an SSC exam form all want different things from what is nominally the same photo.
| Document or form | Photo size | File requirement | Background |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian Passport — Passport Seva upload | 35 × 45 mm portrait | JPEG, commonly 630 × 810 px and under 250 KB — verify live | Plain white |
| State government & local e-portal forms | Usually 35 × 45 mm | JPEG with the pixel and KB limit printed on the live form | Plain white or off-white |
| Police, Army & State recruitment | 35 × 45 mm | JPEG, 200 × 230 px or 350 × 450 px, 20–50 KB | Plain white |
| OCI card / Indian visa / US visa | 51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 inch) | JPEG, 600 × 600 px | Plain white |
| PAN card | Approx. 2.5 × 3.5 cm | JPEG — confirm pixel and KB limits on the live portal | Plain white |
| UPSC / SSC exam forms | Usually 35 × 45 mm | JPEG — confirm the exact px/KB limit on the form notification | Plain white |
| Bank & job application forms | Usually 35 × 45 mm | JPEG — confirm the exact px/KB limit on the form | Plain white |
Always confirm the exact size, pixel count and file-size limit on the live form before submitting.
Tips
Take a photo that passes the first time
A few seconds of preparation saves a rejected form. Follow these checks before you upload.
Stand against a plain, light-coloured wall — it makes background replace reliable and keeps the photo clean.
Keep your face centred, eyes open and head straight; look directly at the camera.
Use soft, even lighting from the front; avoid strong shadows, glare on glasses, or backlight from a window.
Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed; remove hats, headphones and heavy accessories.
Start from a photo at least as large as the target size so enlarging does not blur the face.
Use a recent photograph (within 6 months) and keep the final file watermark-free.

Frequently asked questions
Is this passport photo maker free?
Yes. Upload a photo, crop it to Indian passport size (35 × 45 mm) or 2 × 2 inch, and download a JPG or printable sheet — free, with no sign-in.
Do I need to log in?
No. The page and the tool work without logging in. Everything runs in your browser.
What size is an Indian passport photo?
The standard Indian passport photo is 35 × 45 mm — the same as 3.5 × 4.5 cm, or 413 × 531 px at 300 DPI. The Passport Seva portal commonly references 630 × 810 px. The tool offers both, plus a 2 × 2 inch option for US visas and OCI.
Can I change the background to white?
Yes. Turn on "Replace plain background" and pick a colour. It works best on photos taken against a plain wall; it is not an AI cut-out, so it may not work well on busy backgrounds.
Can I print multiple copies?
Yes. After creating your photo, download a 4×6 or A4 sheet with several evenly spaced copies ready for cutting at a photo studio or home printer.
What file format does it export?
JPG, which is what most Indian government portals accept. The print sheets are also JPG, ready to send to a printer or photo studio.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. All cropping, background replacement and sheet generation happen in your browser. Krosz does not upload, store, or analyse your photo on a server.
