Does living in the US change the rules for Indians?

A US visa or green card does not get Indians into the Schengen area visa-free. You apply in the US at the consulate of your main destination that covers your state, pay EUR 90, and your US status must usually stay valid 3 months beyond your return.

It changes where you apply, not whether you need a visa. The European Commission's rule is simple: as a general rule, apply at the consulate responsible for the country where you are legally resident. For an Indian on an H-1B, L-1, F-1, H-4 or a green card, that means a consulate in the US.

Two things do not change. India stays on the visa-required list, and a US visa gives no Schengen access. And one thing gets worse: the EU's 2024 cascade of 2-year then 5-year multiple-entry visas applies to Indian nationals residing in India and applying there. From the US, consulates use the standard rules. See passport vs residency rules for why.

Applying with a US status that expires soon after the trip. Renew or extend first.
Holding an old passport issued more than 10 years ago.
Insurance below EUR 30,000 or not valid in all Schengen states.
Booking a tight date. Allow 15 days, plus appointment wait, plus mail return.

ExtendingAn extension is possible only in exceptional cases: force majeure, humanitarian reasons or serious personal reasons. Apply to the immigration authority of the country you are in before your allowed stay ends. Force majeure and humanitarian cases are free; otherwise the fee is EUR 30.
Getting back into USAH-1B, L-1 and other visa holders need a valid US visa stamp to return, so an expired stamp means a stamping appointment before you come back. F-1 students need a Form I-20 endorsed for travel by their DSO, a valid visa and a passport valid six months past re-entry. Green card holders can re-enter on a valid card after absences of less than one year.
