Muscat is a short flight from Dubai, and the mountains of Musandam are closer still. Every long weekend, thousands of UAE residents head to Oman. If you hold an Indian passport, the question is not whether you can go but which visa route fits you. In Oman's case the answer is printed on your residence documents: your profession.
Your UAE residence can unlock Oman's GCC Resident visa (OMR 5), but only if your profession is on Oman's approved list, your residence has at least 3 months left and your passport has 6 months.
Does living in the UAE change the rules for Oman?
Yes, and more than for most destinations. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) run a dedicated GCC Resident visa. Oman's government portal describes it as a tourist visa for approved professionals residing in GCC countries, and their companions.
The official conditions are:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months.
- A valid residency in a GCC country (such as the UAE) for at least 3 more months.
- You must be employed by an institution.
- Your profession must be on the ROP approved list.
Documents: a copy of your passport, a personal photo and a copy of your residence card. The fee is OMR 5. Apply through the ROP e-visa portal at evisa.rop.gov.om, choosing the GCC Resident category.
This is a rare case where residence beats passport. Read passport vs residency: which one sets your visa rules for how it works elsewhere.
How do you know if your profession qualifies?
Oman checks the occupation recorded on your UAE residence documents, not the job title on your business card. ROP publishes the approved list on its e-visa portal, and it has been widened over time to cover many professional, technical and managerial roles. Press reports say blue-collar categories are not on it.
Check the exact wording of your occupation before you apply. If it reads "sales executive" on your visa but you are now a manager, Oman goes by the visa.
Oman visa at a glance for Indians in the UAE
| Route | Who it suits | Key conditions |
|---|---|---|
| GCC Resident visa | UAE residents in approved professions | OMR 5; residence valid 3+ months; passport 6+ months; employed |
| Visa on arrival (MEA listing) | Indians holding a US, UK, Australia, Japan or Canada visa | Confirm with your airline before relying on it |
| Standard tourist e-visa | Everyone else | Apply on evisa.rop.gov.om; fee shown at application |
| Sponsored visit visa | Visiting family or a company in Oman | Sponsor applies from Oman |

What if your profession is not on the list?
You still have options. India's MEA notes that Oman offers visa on arrival to passport holders with a UK, US, Australia, Japan or Canada visa. Otherwise, apply for a standard tourist e-visa on the ROP portal. MEA lists a 10-day single-entry tourist visa, which can be extended, alongside one-month and three-month options. A relative or company in Oman can also sponsor a visit visa.

Driving to Oman through Hatta or Al Wajajah?
Many UAE residents drive across. We could not confirm current land-border fees and car insurance requirements from an official source, so check two things before you set off: ask your insurer whether your policy covers Oman, and confirm on the ROP portal that your visa is valid for entry by land.
Mistakes that get Oman applications refused
- Applying under the GCC Resident category with an ineligible profession. The occupation on your residence document decides it.
- Residence visa expiring within 3 months. Renew it first or use another route.
- Passport under 6 months. The GCC Resident visa requires at least 6 months.
- Uploading a blurry residence card or photo. Scan both sides clearly.
- Assuming family qualify on their own. The route is for approved professionals and their companions, so the eligible applicant should lead the application.

What about getting back into the UAE?
Your UAE residence visa must be valid when you return, and you should carry your Emirates ID. UAE government guidance says a residence visa is nullified automatically if you live outside the UAE for more than six months continuously, with some exceptions. For a weekend in Muscat this is a formality, but an expiring visa also blocks the Oman GCC route itself.
