Dubai Layover on an F-1: Do Indian Students in the US Need a UAE Visa? (2026)

Winter break flights from the US to India often route through Dubai. If you're an Indian student on an F-1, here's when you can step out and see the city, when you can't, and the one thing to check before you book.

Winter break is coming and the cheapest US–India fares go through Dubai. Can you leave the airport on a long layover? It depends on one thing: the F-1 visa stamp in your passport.

Quick answer: staying in the transit area? No UAE visa needed. Want to leave the airport? If your F-1 visa stamp is valid (ideally 6+ months), you can usually get the UAE's 14-day visa on arrival as an Indian with a US visa. If the stamp has expired, you need a UAE visa arranged in advance.

Three scenarios

Your situationCan you leave Dubai airport?
Valid F-1 stamp, 6+ months leftYes: 14-day visa on arrival for Indians with a US visa
F-1 stamp expired (status still valid via I-20)No visa on arrival: get a UAE visa or transit visa in advance
Connecting flight within a few hoursStay airside: no visa needed

This is the classic student trap: your status in the US is valid because of your I-20, but the visa stamp expired years ago. The UAE (and the US, when you fly back) both look at the stamp.

Transit visas through your airline

If you're not eligible for the visa on arrival, the UAE offers short transit visas for passengers with onward tickets, usually arranged through your airline (Emirates or flydubai) when you book or via manage-booking. Allow a few days.

Your own re-entry to the US

  • Get a travel signature on your I-20 from your DSO before you leave (valid 12 months; 6 months if you're on OPT).
  • If your F-1 stamp has expired, you'll need a new stamp at a US consulate in India before returning. Book the appointment early: winter slots fill fast.
  • Carry enrolment proof and, on OPT, your EAD and job offer letter.
